Most of us go into a relationship not expecting much or expecting too much. But are either of those approaches healthy? There are healthy relationship expectations you need to keep in mind if you want your relationship to last.

1. Proper Communication

This is not only a healthy relationship expectation, but it’s crucial. You need to be able to talk to your partner in a safe, open, and honest way. If not, well, your relationship isn’t going to work. Healthy communication is something you need to have in any relationship. Can you imagine not being able to talk to your partner about your feelings and emotions? What’s the point of being in a relationship then?

2. Promises can be broken.

We’ve all watched so many romantic movies that most of us have that narrative stuck in our heads. Let us tell you something, that isn’t healthy for anyone. First of all, it holds men to the idea of acting like Prince Charming every second of the day, and secondly, it gives women the idea that we need to have a happily ever after.

Here’s the thing, we’re all humans. So, sure, you may have made a promise to go running with your partner every day but are now bored of it, working a different schedule, or simply unable to because of an injury. Your partner must accept and understand that not all promises can always be upheld.

3. Priorities will change.

When we enter a relationship, at least during the honeymoon phase, we’re usually the highest priority to our partner. Naturally, this will change with time. Of course, you will always be a priority and if you feel that you’re less important than a Sunday game, well, then you need to evaluate your relationship.

However, you and your partner have obligations and relationships outside of your own, so, from time to time, your priorities will change. Knowing and understanding that they’ll shift from time to time is a healthy relationship expectation to have.

4. Good Support

This is a healthy and needed expectation to have in your relationship. You should always feel that your partner is supportive of you and your decisions.

Even if they don’t agree with the choice you’re making, they’re by your side while you make your choices. You shouldn’t feel that you’re going through something alone when you have a boyfriend or girlfriend. If that’s the case, then you’re better off single.

5. We learn through making mistakes.

We all make mistakes, but what’s important is if we learn from them. This is a healthy relationship expectation. Imagine being with someone who continues to make the same mistake time and time again? Of course, it’ll take a couple times for them to get it right, but you want them to understand and learn from their mistakes. If not, then you’re doomed to a circle around the same old conflict again and again.

Whether you’re starting a new relationship, in a seasoned one, or even married, it’s important you set healthy relationship expectations that will help you maintain your love and happiness.
